Then his relatives discover that he left a fortune of old coins inside his model trains. Mother makes her own whiskey, Johnnie and Kees the two oldest sons both handle in stolen goods, the oldest daughter, also named Kees, constantly hangs out with wrong boyfriends, and Toet and Henkie the youngest son and daughter are brats. Meanwhile, when the foundation learns who the Flodders really are, they are kicked out of their hotel and forced to sleep in the park. However, the second the family gets on the plane, chaos ensues and as if that is not bad enough, upon arrival, the family are mistaken for a Russian delegation of doctors.
Historically, surnames evolved as a way to sort people into groups - by occupation, place of origin, clan affiliation, patronage, parentage, adoption, and even physical characteristics like red hair. Only Sjakie remains convinced of the familys good nature and keeps protecting them. He thought that a film about his family would be a good thing, when, in fact, it was done to mock them. In order to prevent a scandal, the American government makes an agreement with the Dutch embassy and has the Flodders released from jail, on the condition that they leave the country. His only forms of communication are a whistle and a railway signal. Flodder is more than a simple comedy: it is also a social satire of the cool Dutch bourgeosie who wants to be isolated of the big towns where there is criminality and so on but who goes to the warm countries during holidays to change their mediocre existence.

The next day, they get food by stealing a hot dog car and later by roasting some birds. In the finale of the film he destroys the house of the Flodders who take it with good humour. In 1987 it won a for best Art Direction. Finally, he's hit by a car and then mistaken for a gender reassigment patient at the hospital. With the money she decides to buy the house in which they are living.
Sequel The film was followed by two sequels, 1992 and 1995. The project however turns out to be a big failure, because the family doesnt adapt at all and continues with their illegal or otherwise antisocial activities. An exchange program has been proposed between the United States and the Netherlands. Yves, on the other hand, went to the premiere, where he quickly realized that the film had nothing to do with his family, which infuriated him.
They decide to throw a party where everyone is invited. The situation was solved when it turned out that Sjakie, who married the two, forgot to ask the witnesses to sign the required papers, thus making the marriage illegitimate. While Stapel admitted he later returned to the role because of the money, he still makes his role of the reckless Johnny work quite well here and once again, Nelly Frijda truly shows why she is perfectly cast as the cigar-chomping, hard-drinking Ma Flodder. With the film shot on location in New York City, American actors were brought in to help bring the international flavor of the film.
Johnny manages to get a first class flight for the family as well as lots of expensive clothing, as a compensation for not telling anybody about the scandal. This results in several confrontations between individual members of the family and the upper class inhabitants. She loves whiskey and other strong alcoholic beverages, but she absolutely cant stand sherry. Just as the president arrives and tries to talk to daughter Kees in her dressing room, the situation escalates because Rosenbaum catches his wife and Johnny having sex in the stockroom, after which Rosenbaum gets infuriated and tries to attack Johnny with a shotgun.
The film is the sequel of the successful film from 1986. Lou Landre once again brings some funny comedy to the role of ally Sjakie, who finds himself in one bad thing after another. However it still attracts a cult following and in 2007 was admitted to the Canon van de Nederlandse Film. The third movie, simply called Flodder 3, was released in 1995. The housing problem in Holland in cities like Amsterdam or Rotterdam is acute and there is above all the problem of illegal immigrants. The climax of the film is the engagement party, which is attended by everyone and quickly gets out of hand; the people from the neighbourhood however have a great time and finally start to appreciate the family as they are.
It was admitted to the Canon van de Nederlandse Film in 2007. Alcoholism is also a subject of the movie: the alcohol is made at home and consumed in high quantities and whisky is drunk in floods by Kolonel Kruisman. However, when Ma spits out her cigar it accidentally flies into the frying pan, creating a fire which lights the gasoline in the water tank. By the time the police arrive, Ma Flodder has already stopped Rosenbaum by putting his head underwater.
